‘If you look after the root of the tree, the fragrance and flowering will come by itself. If you look after the body, the fragrance of the mind and spirit will come of itself’
- BKS Iyengar ‘The Tree of Yoga’
YOGA IS A PHILOSOPHY, SCIENCE AND ART
My teaching is based on the teaching of B.K.S. Iyengar one of the world’s most prominent and widely respected yoga masters. His dedicated practice and teaching have inspired practitioners all over the world for over 70 years.
YOGA PRACTITIONERS EXPERIENCE THE FOLLOWING
- improved general health, posture, flexibility and strength
- increased energy levels and vitality
- enhanced ability to relax
- reduced stress levels
- a sense of inner calm and heightened wellbeing
- improved concentration and mindset
- greater discernment and integrity
However, these are just some of the many by-products of practising yoga. It has a wider purpose as it is a complete system for culturing and evolving the whole human being to realise one’s highest human potential.
In classes, you will learn and practise a variety of yoga poses (known as ‘asanas’) ranging from the dynamic to the restful. These asanas generally leave one feeling refreshed, relaxed and energised. Through asana practice, one acquires a firm foundation from which to learn ‘pranayama’, the regulation of the breath. So pranayama is taught once the asana has been achieved. Asanas and pranayama are just two aspects of this life encompassing subject. Through them, we develop qualities such as concentration, discernment and sensitivity, which refine our awareness.
Yoga is an individual non-competitive path however and each person works to their own capacity and level of interest.
WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA?
What differentiates Iyengar Yoga from the many other approaches today is the careful attention paid to alignment. The poses are taught with detail and precision as alignment is the essence of the asanas.
B.K.S. Iyengar is also particularly renowned for making yoga accessible to anyone through his pioneering use of ‘props’ such as yoga mats, bricks, or belts. However, it is the genius behind their application which is his true gift to us all. Using yoga equipment enables everyone to taste the fruits of yoga practice, which might otherwise be beyond reach. Yoga is therefore suitable for all, irrespective of age, state of health or ability.
